Advantages of wearing Two Hearing Aids We often hear the question: “Do I really need two hearing aids?” While there are situations in which one hearing aid is appropriate, over 70 percent of hearing aid fittings in the United States are binaural (two hearing aids). There are a variety of reasons why binaural hearing is better than monaural hearing. With binaural hearing, the brain is better able to compare and contrast speech versus noise than if the signal is received monaurally. Thus, hearing is better in noise with two hearing aids. With binaural hearing, you don’t have to worry about someone being on your “bad side.” Additionally, your ability to localize sound (determine from where a sound is coming) is greatly improved with binaural hearing. With binaural hearing, your brain is better able to use the signals it receives. This means you do not have to strain to hear and are less fatigued after a long day of hearing. Finally, you can actually reduce further deterioration of speech understanding by keeping your neural pathways active with binaural hearing. |
